Ms von Hurst investigated the effect of vitamin D supplementation on insulin resistance and markers of bone turnover in South Asian women who were insulin resistant and vitamin D deficient. The outcome of the randomised, placebo-controlled trial demonstrated, for the first time, an improvement in insulin resistance with vitamin D supplementation, and a decrease in bone turnover in the women who were post-menopausal. These results suggest that maintaining adequate vitamin D levels could reduce the risk of developing metabolic and bone diseases, especially in older age.
