Workforce sustainability in the Chilean logging sector: using an ergonomics approach
Read article at Massey Research Online:
Mr Meyer Cohen investigated the impact of working conditions on the workforce in the Chilean forestry sector. He also examined the strategies that the Chilean forestry companies implemented to address those issues. His research findings indicate that even though working conditions in the Chilean forestry sector have improved they continue to have a negative impact on workers in terms of occupational health, and market attractiveness. Both aspects also influence negatively in the ageing of the workforce. He found that the forestry organisations' strategies are not sufficient to assure sustainability in the Chilean forestry sector, since organisations continue to focus on the prevention of accidents rather than on the sources of the occupational health problems. Mr Meyer Cohen's research showed that those strategies did not pay attention to the wellbeing of the workforce and the development of resources, aspects the workers themselves demanded.
