Needs Analysis for an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Course for Thai Undergraduates in a Food Science and Technology Programme

Mrs Chatsungnoen conducted a mixed-methods case study to explore the English language needs of students and relevant stakeholders for an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course as part of a food science and technology programme at a university in Thailand. She used a needs analysis model by Dudley-Evans and St John (1998) as a research framework, and multiple sources of data were collected in both academic and occupational contexts. She found reading and translation were the most needed skills in the academic context, whereas speaking and listening were required in the occupational context. She also found a mismatch of the perceptions of the needs between the ESP teachers and other stakeholders. Her research contributes to knowledge about using a needs analysis as an on-going process within course development. She developed a redesigned needs analysis model which could be adapted for use in national and international contexts.
