Project Title: Investigations into culling and mortality of ewes in NZ sheep flocks

Many ewes in New Zealand are culled before the end of their productive life and around 7-10% die on-farm per annum. This represents a big financial loss to the New Zealand sheep industry. For this study around 12,500 ewe lambs on 3 farms have been individually-identified and their bodyweight and body condition score is regularly measured and recorded in addition to their reproductive performance. Other things that are recorded include the culling date and reason for culling for each ewe, those ewes who fail to rear a lamb, and where possible ewes who die on-farm. In addition very thin ewes that are deemed likely to die on-farm are humanely euthanized and necropsied to assess reasons for their weight loss. This will be done throughout the lifetime of the ewes (up to 5-6 years of age) and will allow us to look at the impact of production factors on premature culling and on-farm mortality in ewes.
