Project Title: Icy tornadoes in the quantum world - Josephson junctions of Bose-Einstein condensates

Quantum physics allows for phenomena that we usually do not encounter in our everyday world, such as objects tunnelling through a barrier, or realising a superposition by being in two different states at the same time. A famous example is Schrödinger's cat, which could, according to the rules of quantum physics, be dead and alive at the same time. This has never been observed, but exactly where and how the realm of quantum physics ends is currently an open question that we propose to address in a theoretical study of ultra-cold atom clouds. Eddy currents in superconducting electronic devices known as Josephson junctions have been seen tunnelling through barriers and realising superpositions, and similar phenomena are expected in ultra-cold atomic gases. By realising the coldest temperatures on Earth, atomic gases in the state of Bose-Einstein condensation offer one of the most promising systems for pushing the boundaries of quantum physics into the macroscopic world. We will employ, and further develop, cutting-edge theoretical tools to simulate the quantum behaviour of objects made up of many atoms.

Project Title: The few-body dynamics of ultra cold atoms

Two people who hate each other are trapped in the same room and rush to the door. As they both try to make their way out as quickly as possible, will they end up taking more time than people with less sentiment acting independently? What happens when three or more people are involved? Replacing people with atoms, and cooling them to ultra-low temperatures we enter the weird world of quantum mechanics. Here we find counter-intuitive behaviour like reflection from attractive surfaces - or that independent atoms leaking from a box escape more slowly when their number is counted repeatedly. This phenomenon is known as the quantum Zeno effect. We now ask the following questions: Will interactions between the particles modify or even enhance the quantum Zeno effect? As atoms escape from a box, will their motion be correlated and carry information about the interactions they experienced within the box? Experimentally, the manipulation and detection of single or few atoms at the quantum level is just becoming feasible creating the need for detailed theoretical understanding. Therefore researchers from Germany and New Zealand will join forces to compute the exact dynamics of ultra-cold particle systems containing 2 to 30 interacting atoms.
