Prof Juliana Mansvelt BA, BA(Hons), PhD

Professor of Geography

Doctoral Supervisor
School of People, Environment and Planning

Juliana Mansvelt is a Professor employed 0.6 FTE in the Geography Programme, in the School of People, Environment and Planning.  She currently teaches into 145,111 Society, Environment and Place, 145.203 Geographies of Inequalities, 145.311 Geographies of Globalisation (course co-ordinator) and post-graduate courses 145.712 Frontiers in Human Geography and 145.710 Consumption and Place (course co-ordinator).

Juliana is author of Geographies of Consumption (Sage, 2005) and editor of Green Consumerism.  An A-Z Guide (Sage, 2011).    Her research and publications have centred on consumption practices and spaces, experiences of ageing in place, and teaching and learning. Juliana has also contributed to a number of reference works, textbooks, and encyclopedias on topics as diverse as interviewing, writing up research, scenario based learning and on aspects of consumption and consumer culture.

Juliana’s research has involved participation in a range of social science projects - examining older people’s interactions with organisations, and the ways in which life-courses, living standards, mobilities and identity are shaped in relation to consumption practices and choices.  A qualitative researcher, Juliana is interested in how consumption, commodity practices and material contexts and social norms combine to influence identity and place.   She is currently researching experiences and practices of Christmas in Aotearoa/New Zealand and writing an open-access textbook enitled 'Consumption Matters: People, Place and Practice'. She is a member of HART, an interdisciplinary team of researchers studying issues related to Health and Age (recipients of the 2012 Ƶ Team Research Medal) and of CARS (The Centre for Advanced Retail Studies, Ƶ).  She is currently an Editorial Board Advisory Member of Geographical Research, an Associate Editor of Kotuitui: New Zealand Journal of Social Sciences Online, and on the editorial board of The International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

A Fellow of the New Zealand Geographical Society, Juliana was presented with a distinguished service medal in 2013, and in 2021 the New Zealand Distinguished Geographier Medal.   Juliana is also the recipient of three tertiary teaching awards: a Ƶ Award and a New Zealand tertiary teaching award for Sustained Excellence in Teaching and a New Zealand Geographical Society Teaching excellence award. She is a Senior Fellow of the Advanced Higher Education Academy, and a member of Ako Aotearoa (the NZ Tertiary teaching awards academy) and of the International Network of Teaching Fellows.

Juliana is a social geographer, interested in understanding how social relations and places intersect through mundane and everyday practices, focusing particularly on consumption, identity and experiences of ageing.

Research Expertise

Research Interests

My research interests are focussed on the relationship between consumption, ageing and place.  These include projects which have focussed on:

  • Working at leisure – contribution, productivity and pleasure in daily activities for the recently retired
  • Decisions to move- looking at decisions to move to retirement villages and experiences of living in these places
  • Understanding the connections between living standards and the capability to achieve  security, contribution, comfort, enjoyment, social integration and autonomy
  • Exploring the connections between material objects and contexts, consuming practices, and experiences, meanings of aging well
  • Examining the challenges and opportunities provided by organisations to enable older people to live mobile lives (to make bodies, knowledges and goods and services to move and flow)
  • Explorations of expectations sourrounding older people in relation to gifting, passing on and legacy
  • The role of mundane commodities, commodity practices and spaces surrounding acquisition, possession and disposal in framing experiences and meanings of ageing well in place
  • Exploring Christmas Consumption Pracice: I am currently examininng diverse experiences of consumption at Christmas in Aotearoa with a view to understanding the norms and expectations which configure Christmas, and the inclusion, exclusion and identity affects which derive from these.

Research Opportunities

  • Supervision  (any time) I am interested in supervising any projects related to my research interests or the topics listed below which I am interested in pursuing further:
  • Christmas Practices: Geographies of Inclusion and Exclusion  (01/07/2024) Reflecting on discourses and expectations associated with Christmas influence the experiences of those who may not meet these social, financial, familial or identity norms.
  • Engaging with Failure: the possibilities and problems of Ageing Well  (any time) Biographical, bodily and object failure – resilience, coping and mobilities when things and bodies and networks fail
  • Consuming across the life-course  (anytime) Undertaking life-course interviews to examine the changing significance and meanings of consumption practices and commodities over time
  • Technologies and Older People  (11/11/2020) Understanding the social and spatial constitution of what counts as 'technologies' and the ways in which they may facilitate and constrain older people's social practices in everyday life.

Project Title: Developing an Economic Living Standards Index for Elders

Living standards are proving to be an essential marker of economic status and well-being. By 2012 a theoretically based and statistically robust index of living standards for older people will be provided for use in population research (such as the NZ Longitudinal Ƶ of Ageing), by Government research groups (such as the Ministry of Social Development), and for assessment use by community groups (such as Age Concern). This module will be used to assess and track changes in the living standards of older people. Limitations in standards of living constrain health and social participation and effective policy change to improve living standards requires early identification of deterioration. Measuring the living standards of older people effectively will provide a scientific basis for social policy advice to advance the independence and well-being of older people. The instrument developed in this project will equip researchers, policy makers, and community groups to assess gaps and recommend social and economic policies that ensure positive ageing and participation for older New Zealanders.

Project Title: Aging, Purchase and Place

This 2009-11 study endeavoured to explore the consumption decisions and practices of 13 individuals of a range of living standards, aged 55-70 drawn from the 2008 iteration of Health, Work and Retirement Ƶ (/massey/learning/departments/school-of-psychology/research/hart/surveys.cfm) living in the North Island of New Zealand. Three qualitative interviews were undertaken with each of the participants to examine decisions and experiences of shopping, purchase, using and disposal of commodities and the consumption spaces in which this occurred. The analysis revealed that as one ages, life changes bring shifting patterns and practices of consumption, use and disposal. The state and lasting of material things, the kinds of social, intergenerational and familial networks that people are a part of, their living standards and the immediate environs in which people live also impact upon people's consumption practice. While there were significant differences across living standards in participants' capacity to save, spend and choose commodities, all participants demonstrated expertise, creativity, resilience and knowledge through their consumption practices. In additional all participants were keen to avoid materialism, waste and 'excess' in their consumption with many seeing practices such as re-use and re-cycling as a means of community contribution and good citizenship. The research highlighted the significance of consumption as a mundane but important set of practices important in shaping identity and a sense of wellbeing, autonomy and connection to people and place.
