Clifford is an Associate Professor in the School of Psychology in Albany. He is also a registered Clinical and Neuropsychologist and was previously Director of the Centre for Psychology. He has taught across various under- and postgraduate programmes and has supervised research projects across all postgraduate levels. His fields of interest include critical psychology, critical neuroscience, and social theory. His current research focus is on documenting and theorising the social practices and power relations that shape tenant-landlord relationships, including mapping their intergenerational consequences materially, socially, and psychologically.

Research Interests

My research and supervision interests include, broadly speaking, critical neuroscience and critical psychology. I am happy to discuss supervising students who are familiar with qualitative methods. I would be interested in supervising students as part of the Our home/their property: The renter’s life project. This project aims to document and theorise the social practices and power relations that shape tenant-landlord relationships, including mapping their intergenerational consequences materially, socially, and psychologically.

Project Title: Immigration and Identity: South Africans in Aotearoa New Zealand

The aim of this research project is to better understand the current social, cultural, and historical resources diverse expatriate South Africans use in the process of identity construction. This includes a focus on the constructions of the country of origin, country of settlement, indigenous people, other migrants, and whiteness within the contemporary 'postcolonial', neoliberal landscape. A diverse literature exists on immigration to, and immigrants in, Aotearoa New Zealand. A growing body of research exists on South Africans in Aotearoa New Zealand with a number of studies also emerging out of Australia. This project takes as its starting point this Australian-based socio-political research, specifically work completed by Sonn, Lewis and colleagues (2002, 2005, 2008, 2009), which builds on a 'liberation perspective' and engages various dimensions of diversity (e.g., ethnicity, 'race', and gender). The project is comprised of several components, including a review of the seminal and recent literature on immigration to and settlement in Aotearoa New Zealand, the analysis of the representation of South Africans in mainstream New Zealand media over the last decade, and a discursive analysis of transcribed interviews and focus groups with South African expatriates.
