Sarah is Director of the New Zealand Life Cycle Management Centre (NZLCM Centre), and Associate Professor in Life Cycle Management at 羞羞视频, New Zealand. Her research focuses on development and application of Life Cycle
Assessment (LCA) and related approaches such as carbon and water footprinting, and particularly on (a) methods for LCA and related techniques and (b) the relationship between LCA and decision-making. Regarding (a), she has specialised in LCA for food systems and has worked on methods for assessing land use and water use, addressing seasonality, and accounting for geographical and process variability. Regarding (b), she provided early critiques of the Food Miles concept and more recently has supervised PhD projects on protocols for assessing carbon footprints of orchard fruit, uptake of Life Cycle Management (LCM) in the primary sector, and recognition of culture in LCA. Her research has explored the nexus between quantitative environmental management tools and decision-making systems, including developing advanced methods for hybridising LCA and management practice to support policymaking, and managing the Life Cycle Management Project funded by Landcare Research and the Ministry of Economic Development in 2008-2011.

Sarah has worked with businesses and government to integrate life cycle thinking into management practices, product design, and policymaking for almost twenty years. Currently Sarah is Chair of the Standards New Zealand International Review Group on LCA, New Zealand representative on the ISO 14046 "Water Footprint: Requirements and Guidelines" Working Group, Co-Chair of the 羞羞视频 Steering Group on Sustainability, and a Committee member of the Life Cycle Association of New Zealand. She previously worked as Research Leader at Landcare Research where she led two carbon footprinting projects for the horticultural sector, and managed the Life Cycle Management Project to integrate LCM into the operations, management and strategies of manufacturing companies. Prior to that Sarah was Director of the postgraduate Environmental Life Cycle Management Programme at the University of Surrey, UK, and Chair of the SETAC Europe LCA Steering Group. Sarah publishes and lectures internationally in development and application of LCA and related approaches.

Project Title: Developing a Construction 4.0 transformation of Aotearoa New Zealand鈥檚 construction industry

Prof Sarah McLaren is leading the Sustainable Future theme of this major MBIE programme. The programme brings together a multidisciplinary international expert team of researchers to develop Construction 4.0 data-based, digitally integrated design concepts that are optimised for environmental impact, manufacturability, constructability and reuse. The research programme is utilising a M膩tauranga M膩ori framing for both the research and project management. In the Sustainable Future theme, in partnership with the Building Research Association of NZ, we are calculating the carbon footprint of the alternative prefabrication and modularisation solutions developed in the other research themes, and comparing them with existing approaches using a whole-of-life whole-of-building modelling approach. Their performance will be calibrated against carbon budgets based on the 1.5潞C global mean surface temperature target.

Project Title: Carbon Budget - Understanding the Sensitivities

The building sector has an important role in reducing global greenhouse (GHG) emissions to a level compatible with global climate goals. An absolute sustainability approach combined with life cycle assessment (LCA) provides a means to determine the required improvement in GHG emissions associated with the New Zealand building sector in order to achieve identified climate goals. This project extended previous absolute sustainability assessments of New Zealand residential houses in the context of climate targets to examine the sensitivity of the outputs to various input parameters, and additionally extends this analysis to include office buildings. It was found that the choice of grandfathering year, combined with differences in the method used to calculate New Zealand consumption-based emissions, had a significant influence on the carbon budget (CB) available for the different building sectors. The post-2050 CB provided to New Zealand buildings was also a key determinant of the lifetime CB available for new buildings currently being designed and constructed. Scenarios involving alternative designs, smaller house size, and energy efficiency of new buildings resulted in relatively modest improvements in the overall CF of buildings. In order to be compatible with a 1.5oC climate target, improvements will be required in multiple areas within the building sector including building design, energy efficiency and the embodied impacts of materials and construction methods. Behavioural and demand aspects also have an important role in areas such as non-heating energy demand (e.g. hot water, plug loads), the occupancy of buildings, and expectations regarding the size of buildings.
