Pou Akonga (Executive Director) Maori Student Success

Maori Student Success

I have a particular research interest in race, gender and leadership issues in sport management, and my most recent publications have focused on the incorporation of Māori values and tikanga in sport contexts, Sport for Development from an indigenous perspective, taonga tuku iho in rugby, elite Maori athletes and their cultural identities in sport, the leadership and organisational culture of the All Blacks, Black Ferns, Māori All Blacks, Māori women's experiences in sport management and leadership, and the involvement of mothers in elite sport as leaders and athletes. For 10 years I captained the New Zealand women's rugby team (Black Ferns), and since retiring in 2006 I have been involved in various roles in rugby, sport, government taskforces, and University. I am currently a mentor for the Tania Dalton Foundation, a Leader for Te Aho Tāmaka (Central Economic Development Agency in Manawatū), President of the NZ Rugby Museum, and an Ambassador for the Kind Hearts Movement. I have taught sport in the social context, leadership and teamwork, and guest lecture on topics such as Māori women's leadership approaches, the incorporation of tikanga and Treaty principles in organisational contexts, and the intersection of indigeneity and gender in leadership experiences. I am passionate about promoting opportunities for women and Māori such as the Young Women in Leadership@Massey workshop for Year 12 female students, Te Rau Aukaha (Māori Student Mentoring Programme) within the Massey Business School, and encouraging diversity and inclusion within organisational contexts.

My research focuses on women in sport, Māori women's leadership experiences, and the incorporation of Māori values and tikanga in organisational contexts. In December, 2016 I became the first woman on the New Zealand Rugby Board and Chair of the New Zealand Māori Rugby Board. In 2018 I joined the SportNZ Board and started a new role as Associate Dean Māori for the Massey Business School with a focus on supporting Māori  research, engagement and student success. I use my experiences in governance and academia to transform narratives related to Māori, women and girls, leadership, sport and business.
